. our susan candiotti joins us with the latest on the investigation. >> and of course the question is, why an attack on this 34-year-old diplomat who had been in the country for about eight years now working at the nicaraguan mission. cesar mercado. and police found not one but two knives. and they weren't found next to his body. they were found in the bathroom of the small studio apartment where the diplomat lived. cesar mercado, apparently one of the knives were a steak knife according to new york police commissioner paul brown. and he says it was found near the bathroom sink and the sink was filled with blood, unfortunately. and the second knife was a smaller paring knife and that was found inside the sink. so why the positioning of the knives? so many questions to be answered here. his body was found just inside the front door. and when the driver came, the door was unlocked. he opened it up, looked inside, saw the body, and immediately called the police. so they have a lot to try to figure out. his throat, indeed, was cut. and they also said that he was stabbed in the stomach. so

months ago this week, a top to bottom overhaul of u.s. health care, an overhaul that presidents dating back to teddy roosevelt have contemplated, debated, or attempted. six months ago, it was sign into law by president obama. today as you may have seen live here on cnn, the president talking about provisions of that law that come into force this week. this is the first of that health care bill. it's what the white house calls a patients' bill of rights. he's just about the only democrat who is going to use health and reform in the same sentence because the reason has to do with the calendar. we're 40 days away from the elections where every single house seat and 37 senate seats are up for grabs. voters are split to say the least. 40% of americans favor reform, 56% oppose it. there are some tricks to that poll because the 56% oppose, some oppose because it didn't go far enough. most say it's too liberal, but a sizable chunk says it doesn't go far enough. when we ask which party can handle the issue better, it's a dead heat. all of this forms a backdrop to the president's visit to a fami

elections in november. nbc's tracie potts joins us. good morning, tracie. >> reporter: what to do about taxes. the senate confirmed what the house already said, this is not going to happen before you go to the polls in november. senate democrats got together, but could not agree on how to move forward. the issue is whether or not to preserve the bush tax cuts for everyone or just for the middle class and let taxes go up on the wealthy. it is a political hot potato headed into november. not one that the democrats now say they want to touch before you go to the polls, however, what they did back, a small business bill, $30 billion, a new fund to help small businesses get loans. this was mainly a democratic issue. the idea here is that if businesses have more cash, they'll hire people, buy equipment, expand and help pull this economy out of a slump. the gop called it a bailout. their plan is their new pledge to america, a government that's too big, they say is something they want to get rid of if they're elected in november. they also want to expand tax cuts and several other measures that

know, it's interesting that he used the analogy of talking and describing himself as david up against a goliath when, in fact, he is the leader of one of the largest churches in the united states. he knows presidents and he knows world leaders. so it's hard to imagine that he really is kind of this small individual going up against a giant. i guess in other words, he is trying to portray that the young men who have come forward or their defense team, their legal team is being some sort of goliath. so it's not interesting picture that he tried to portray. he did a very good job, though, of appealing to his congregation whether they truly feel they've heard the truth remains to be seen. we haven't been able to talk to them. we're sequestered in this room here. >> let's bring in don lemon, cnn anchor and reporter, who has been not only covering this but also talking to some members of the congregation. don, martin said it was interesting that he picked david vs. goliath because in many ways the four young men who are accusing the pastor of coercing them into a sexual relationship, i beli

started and told us we in recession before anybody else called it, with me last spring and summer when you said the recession is over. do you agree with, first of all, this? >> in april '09 we said the recession would end in the summer of '09. so we do agree with this. and we have been saying it was june or july. i totally accept the june date. why it's important is because the national bureau of economic research is an objective, using an objective methodology. we all have our feeling, we'll get to in a second, but they're use an objective scorecard for when the economy is expanding, con tragting in a recovery or recession, and it ended in june of '09. let's be clear what that means. all it means is that the economy made it into the recovery room. okay? and started a process of healing. now, anyone who a has been in that situation and made it into a recovery room knows that it still really, really, really hurts when you're in the recovery room, and we're still there. be very, very clear. that's a big part of the reason wyman on the street right now is going to say, who are these guys sayi

just indulge myselo this is my local church. for me it's special because when i used to pray in the jungle, i would pray a lot to this virgin here--the virgin of guadalupe. i read so many times the bible when i was in captivity. i have many favorite passages. one of my favorite is the letter from sans. and he's talking about a vision he had, and he was suffering a lot. and then he hears jesus saying "my grace suffice you." he doesn't need anything else to overcome his pain than the grace of jesus. in a way, he discovered that the more fragile he was, the more stronger he was. and it just made a lot of sense to me in the jungle because it's exactly how i felt. oprah: wow. so what's the most important lesson you think you learned from this ordeal? what did you take from this ordeal? >> well, it--something that helps me every day since i'm free, which is that--it came to a point where i had lost everything. everything. i mean i couldnt move, i couldnt go to the toilet, i couldnt drink when i wanted, i couldnt talk to anybody. i couldn't do anything without--without havingher
